Chapter 12

Skylar slept peacefully with a broad smile on her face. She was proud of the work she had put in, and she knew it wouldn’t be long before she had Brian all to herself.

Thirty minutes later, she woke up and grabbed her purse off the nightstand and pulled out her checkbook. “Shit!” she cursed to herself when she saw that her account balance was under $1,000 and her rent was due. She dropped her head into her hands, trying desperately to think of a way to make a quick dollar until her plans with Brian materialized. She sat like that, her head in her hands, for over ten minutes, but she couldn’t come up with a solution. Giving up, she decided to call Brian and ask for a little money to tide her over.

“Hello?” Brian answered groggily, still half-asleep.

“Hey, baby. What you doing?” Skylar asked in her most seductive voice.

“Sleep. What’s up?” Brian snapped.

“I need your help,” Skylar fired back.

“With what?” Brian spat.

“I need to borrow some money until I start my new job. I’ll pay you back in a couple of weeks.”

“I ain’t got it,” Brian said firmly, wishing now that he’d never gone there with Skylar.

“What you mean you ain’t got it?” Skylar screamed into the phone.

“That’s what I said… and – by the way – we are going to end this shit. Thangs getting’ too crazy,” Brian told her.

“Brian! How are you just going to—”

“Bitch, look here. I don’t know what you up to, but miss me with your bullshit. Just know I’m on to your little game, but it ain’t working no mo’. We through, and this conversation is over!” Brian snapped before he hung up the phone.

“What the fuck you talking about? Okay, nigga, you wanna play like that?” Skylar screamed into the dead line. When she looked at the phone and saw that Brian had hung up, she grew ten times angrier. “Fuck you, nigga!” she screamed, enraged, and she flung her phone across the room.

Brian couldn’t go back to sleep after the angry exchange with Skylar. He lay in bed and wondered if Skylar would tell Lynn of their affair. He knew he had to find a way to get rid of Skylar – or at least make it so Lynn wouldn’t believe her if she tried to tell her anything. Either way, it wasn’t going to be easy.

Lynn had left for the shop before eight that morning because she had an early appointment. Brian had climbed into bed the night before and sexed her like a porn star. After making passionate love in every conceivable position, they cuddled until they both were fast asleep in each other’s arms.

Brian, reluctant to get up, just lay in bed and thought about Lynn and how much he loved her. Seeing how it had hurt him thinking that Lynn may have been sleeping with another man made him realize the hurt he would cause her if he were ever caught fooling around. After
